If’ there’s been one piece of advice I’ve heard since the third grade it’s been to “be humble.” Still, the best advice I’ve ever received, besides how to get free apps on my Evo. But, sometimes its easy to forget that you are not always the biggest dog in the room or the one with the loudest bark. More often than not there will be someone in the room with more influence or power that you have to go through first to get to the goal you are after or the success you desire.
As a result, it’s important to never become so successful or prideful that you forget the art of humility.Being humble will open doors a big ego will close. And that’s because people love to work with people who are more focused on successfully completing the task at hand than being the one on the team with the best idea or getting the most credit. Sometimes we forget that with every project or opportunity we are having to prove ourselves and let our work do the talking for us. Sometimes we forget that not every project or opportunity is glamours, but rather what we do with that project or opportunity is what will make it special and make us stand out; and that’s the point.
So, today just remember to stay humble, keep your ego in check, and never be too clean to get your hands dirty.

I woke up this morning, and watched a movie called “What Loves Is.” The premise of it centered around a group of people talking about relationships and what they thought of love. At the end of movie one of the women said something that struck a cord with me. She said, “Loving something is like giving a Christmas gift, you don’t expect something in return. If you do get something that’s a bonus, but not the reason why you gave your gift.”
Immediately I translated that to how I feel about creating art. While, it is nice to win awards or be on the cover of magazines, that’s not why you start creating. You do it because you love it and you want to add something you have put your passion into with the rest of world. The reward comes at the moment when you take a step back and look at what you have birthed. When you get to see the seed that you planted finally blossom. And whether anyone else cares or notices your work you will already felt like a winner. Because it wasn’t about them, it was about you. You giving something positive back to world.
Now, if you don’t have this feeling about creating art or being apart of the art world, then maybe you need to find a different lane to run in; try politics. Just don’t forget why you create what you create, and what it means to you to be creative. Life is too short to be in denial about why you do the things you do. If it doesn’t come from a place of absolute love then it is a waste of time for you to do it. Now, that’s not to say that you are always going to create things or do things that don’t necessarily fill your heart with joy, because you will from time to time. But the point is to recognize those moments and keep them in perspective when you ask yourself “Why am I doing this?”
Never lose sight of who you are and what you believe in.
